I finished my second UNIVERSITY degree at the age of 23 and started teaching in local High school. I am in the same high school for the past 18 years and as a teacher many challenging situations came across inside of my classrooms. Most of schools in the island develop an inclusive approach for students with special needs. It is needed to clarify that students with special needs with mental disabilities have a teacher who works with them on a weekly basis. However, the cases have been growing in the island and it is clear now that there are many non-official cases of PTSD in the Island which haven’t been treated by these special education teachers.
At the moment, I am a teacher in a high school and I am a researcher at CLEPUL – Research Centre of the Classic University of Lisbon.
For the past four years I have been writing articles for a local Newspaper about emotions, how to deal with pain, how to overcome emotional problems and via mail I got a lot of people sharing their problems and I worked with those people on a volunteer basis to overcome their traumas and PTSD problems.
I am trying to have access to cases in several schools in Madeira because the problem that I foresee at the moment is to make these people accept that they need help to overcome their problems. This is a very small island however, at a National level the PTSD cases are more intense. I am developing my own research to find out how many students we have in our schools suffering from PTSD.
